Essie Butler Please, Smashbox Illume, and Smith’s Rosebud Salve

It has been too long my loves! This is just a quick little post to tell you about 3 products that I’m absolutely l-o-v-i-n-g!

1. Essie Butler Please is such a gorgeous winter blue from Essie. The consistency of this product is awesome, it is opaque (with 2 coats) and dries semi-matte. I have been layering Essie’s Stroke of Brilliance on top for shine and glitter (’tis the season).

2. If you’re on the hunt for the perfect nude lip gloss, Smashbox Illume is an awesome pick. You can snag it at Sephora. Although lately it has been sold out – must be popular! :) If you can find it, get it!

3. Smith’s Rosebud Salve has been a lifesaver lately. Cold air + heat = chapped lips (at least for me! How about you?) This product smells great, is long-lasting,  and appears subtly shiny (almost mimicking a gloss). I bought my first tube at Lux Beauty Store in Red Bank and recently picked up two more at Blue Mercury in Shrewsbury. I always opt for the tube because the pot is just disgusting (honestly, in my opinion it is just a little nasty pot of germs that is probably doing you more harm than good. Get the tube!)

Hope this was helpful!

Maybelline Color Tattoo

The Maybelline Color Tattoo cream gel shadow is an amazing, amazing product! (And yes! It required two amazings…)

What is it?

  • Long-wearing eyeshadow
  • Can be used as a base/primer
  • Crease-free
  • Waterproof
  • Safe for people who wear contacts & have sensitive eyes

What do to with it?

  • Apply it with fingers, brushes or a sponge applicator
  • Wear it alone
  • Layer up different Maybelline Color Tattoo shades
  • Use it as a primer and then layer powder shadows on top of it
  • Use it as an eyeliner (it is a great dupe for a gel eyeliner)

I own 5 of them: Too Cool, Mossy Green, Rich Mahogany, Barely Beige, and Bad to the Bronze. I’ve been wearing them for months and would definitely recommend purchasing them if this is a product that you think you might like. Also, these are very similar to Mac Paint Pots and 1/3 of the price! Just saying… :)

Fall Nail Polish

Here are my Fall 2012 Nail Polish Picks:

Neutral Nails – you can’t go wrong! Nude nails are pretty yet perfect for work. They go with every single thing you wear which is always nice. My favorites include: Butter London Yummy Mummy, OPI Bubble Bath, and Butter London All Hail The Queen.

OPI Bubble Bath and OPI Just Spotted The Lizard

Butter London Shag

Metallics are so trendy right now! The best options for Fall are Butter London Shag and OPI Just Spotted the Lizard. Orly Rage and Essie Penny Talk are great shades for trying the rose gold trend. All of these shades will impeccably compliment the colors of autumn.

OPI Pirouette My Whistle

The Jelly Sandwich Nail trend is all over Pinterest! To achieve this look layer a sheer nail polish, followed by a glitter polish, and finally another coat of the sheer (just like a sandwich…). This is such a fun way to rock glitter on your nails. My favorite sheer to use is OPI Bubble Bath, followed by Revlon Whimsical, Butter London Tart With A Heart or OPI Pirouette My Whistle, and then another coat of Bubble Bath.

Revlon Whimsical and Revlon Stunning

All of the Butter London nail polishes were purchased at LUX Beauty Store in Red Bank (the polishes are Big 3 Free & healthier!). They have a huge selection at this boutique and I highly recommend the brand, it is hands down the best polish I’ve encountered. The OPI polishes were also purchased at LUX in Red Bank. Finally, the Revlon shades were purchased at Harmon’s. :]

Which trend are you most interested in trying?

Clean Skin

I love reading about how to get awesome skin. Who doesn’t love the idea of a flawless face? One thing on this topic that tends to get to me, however, is the fact that products always seem to be the answer. You know exactly what I mean! Although I think using high quality products (preferably organic, natural, or a something with a low rating on the Cosmetic Database) on your skin is important, there are other things you can do to obtain great, healthy skin. Here you go:

Make sure you are sleeping on a clean pillow case. This seems like a no-brainer but how often do you actually change your pillow case? Once a week? Once a month? You sleep on it every single night! Think about what your pillow has to put up with: The bacteria that naturally lives on/in your skin, sweat, lingering makeup, dust, etc.

Keep your cell phone clean. One minute you are texting on it and the next you’re holding it up against your face. Did you wash your hands before you started texting? Didn’t think so… Wipe your phone off every once in a while.

Bacteria can build up in your makeup brushes. Wash your brushes often. Brushes you use to apply liquid makeup products need to be washed more frequently. Use baby shampoo or dish soap to get rid of bacteria built up on your brushes.

What do you do to keep your skin looking fab?

Essie Penny Talk: Rose Gold Nails

Mini Post: Rose Gold Nail Polish Pick

Rose gold accessories, jewelry and makeup is in. And I love it. :) Today I’m going to focus on my favorite rose gold nail polish which is currently Essie Penny Talk. This polish is part of Essie’s new line, Mirror Metallic Collection for Summer 2012. It looks pretty on both the nails and toes and even better when it is paired with a rose gold accessory. The polish is a coppery rose gold and I think this shade will be the perfect summer to fall transition color! Also, Essie is Big 3 Free (which means their polish does not contain Toluene, DBP or Formaldehyde) so that makes me happy as well!

Urban Decay All Nighter

Summer Series: Long-Lasting Makeup

Urban Decay All Nighter Makeup Setting Spray was the best investment in makeup I’ve made to date. I’ve been using it for over a year now and continue to absolutely adore it.  I initially decided to experiment with a trial size of it in the months leading up to my wedding. I was looking for a product that would make my makeup last longer and stay put throughout the day, night and in whatever elements the day would bring (tears, sweat, rain – I wanted to be prepared for anything and everything). What I found was a product that did everything I hoped for and more!

My wedding day came, and my prayers for sunshine were answered! It was a record-breaking day in terms of heat with temperatures soaring around 105 degrees. I relied upon my Urban Decay All Nighter to carry my makeup through the day. It did a fabulous job! There were so many opportunities that day for my makeup to slide off my face: a plethora of kisses on my cheeks from excited guests, humid and hot air pressing against my skin, and a little bit of sweat from dancing the night away. Touch-ups were unnecessary and I was able to enjoy my wedding without worrying about my makeup.

A year later, I continue to enjoy this product. Although I don’t find it necessary 7 days a week, I do reach for it very frequently. Additionally, it is always a must when I’m doing makeup on a client as well.

Using this product is simple. After you’ve applied your makeup simply hold your hand about 8 inches away from your face and spritz your skin with the mist about 2-4 times.

Neutral Nail Favorites

Neutral nails are incredibly chic. They go with every single outfit you wear, look exceptional with jewelry, and gorgeously understated. While the allure of neutral nails is simplicity, this look can often be difficult to achieve. Some of the things to consider when selecting a pale polish for yourself include: opacity, undertones, and quality.

Some neutral shades are super sheer, like Zoya Erin or Essie Allure. While others, like Essie Topless & Barefoot & Essie Fiji are more opaque. In my experience the sheer options are the best because they are the easiest to work with. I paint my nails pretty often and am often in a rush. The sheer versions do not showcase imperfections like their opaque counterparts can.

Undertones are important to consider when selecting a polish. For example, have you ever picked a color and thought that it looked great in the bottle/on a friend but looks awful on you? I have. Orangey-reds are probably the worst color for me. However, reds with a cool blue undertone are really flattering with my skin color. It is worth it to compare your skin undertone to that of the polish. In terms of neutrals, Zoya Cho looks so pretty in the bottle, when I apply it to my nails, the yellow undertones are very apparent and make the product unusable for me (must find someone to pass this on to). :)

When it comes to nail polish, higher quality products include Essie, Zoya, OPI, & Butter London. All of these brands have classic neutral colors to choose from. My favorites are: Essie Allure, Essie Waltz, Zoya Erin,

There are some classics that I am anxious to try: Essie Mademoiselle, Essie Ballet Slippers, OPI Ballet Slippers and Butter London Yummy Mummy. I know, I know… I will get on this soon! :)

A fun option with neutral nail polishes is layering. Try layering Essie Waltz on top of a coat of Essie Allure. You can experiment with different colors and combinations. Try layer a sheer nail polish over an opaque one, or a shimmery polish over a matte one.

Nail polish testing trick: use a piece of clear tape on the back of your hand. Put a dot of the nail polish on top, let it dry and make a decision. Also, walk outside to see the polish in natural light. The bright or fluorescent light may alter the appearance of the shade indoors. If it is flattering, buy it. If not, leave it and try a different color.

Butter London Nail Polish

I’m immensely excited about this brand. Butter London Nail Polishes are Big 3 Free (no formaldehyde, no toluene, and no DBP) and non-toxic. That is not even the best part though, the formula is incredible: long-lasting, easy to apply, and a great, high-quality consistency. The color range is pretty nice too! My favorites are Trout Pout and Slapper. Although Butter London has been around for a bit, you can now purchase it at Sephora, which makes me quite happy.

It’s love. :)

Benefit Hello Flawless Oxygen Wow

This product was diligently slathered on my skin for 2 weeks straight. I tried applying it with a primer, a brush, a beauty blender, and a moisturizer. Here is the verdict: I regret buying it. At $34.00, this product is not the most expensive foundation I’ve ever purchased. I’m disappointed, however, because I know I should’ve just opted for my tried & true Makeup Forever Mat Velvet + or Makeup Forever HD.

Here are some of the major drawbacks of this product (and for the record, I’m a fan of Benefit and have a huge collection of their products that I find invaluable, the Hello Flawless Liquid Foundation is just not one of them):

  • Small color range (it comes in 9 shades – what?!)
  • Yellow-ish pigmented formula (I tried 4 different shades and found that all of them have yellow undertones)
  • No staying power (it slide off my face after about 4-5 hours – not my best look)
  • Although oil-free it seemed to make my face appear oily (and I don’t have oily skin, quite the opposite actually)

Although this drawbacks are unforgivable, there are some things Benefit got right with this product: packaging, product names, and consistency. The packaging is quite user-friendly – I love the pump and shape of the bottle. Each name is cute! It makes me want to wear this foundation (petty, I know…). And finally, the consistency of this product is likable. It feels like a tinted moisturizer which is nice for the warmer weather.

I will either pass this product on to someone who might enjoy it more than me (ahem, my sister…) or just continue to wear it since it was $34.oo. Either way, the harsh truth is that I will not be re-purchasing it!
